  • Kid A>Amnesiac? Hold up there just one second...

I've just realised that Amnesiac may be one of the biggest growers ever. By the term 'grower' I mean that the record doesn't seem to be extremely impressive at first, but listen after listen, the album seems to become better and better. That sort of 'grower'. There are people who will always suggest that Kid A is better than Amnesiac, in fact the vast majority of Radiohead's fans prefer Kid A. I disagree. Kid A is epic, no doubt about that. It flows better. The tracklisting isn't as messed up. It's more unique, and it's more experimental. It is the beginning of a new era for Radiohead, or was the beginning, anyway. But Amnesiac, for me, is where Radiohead really nailed that experimental vibe that they had been teetering on for a good few years. Yes, Amnesiac is made up of songs recorded in the same sessions as Kid A, but I think that Amnesiac holds the better tracks. For one thing, Amnesiac holds quite a variety of different musical styles, at least by Radiohead's standards. Whereas Kid A uses rather melancholy sounds throughout its duration, usually created with drum machines, some form of organ, and the odd manipulated guitar, stretched out over ooh, 50 minutes, with a lot of atmospheric sound effects in the background, Amnesiac prefers to be a more light-hearted, more versatile album while still comprising some truly epic numbers. (NOTE: the following song mentions will not include all the songs on the record, just the ones that I think stand out) Pyramid Song, for example, is one of their most beautiful songs yet, at least if you listen to the lyrics and take in their meaning. "we all went to heaven in a little rowboat, there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt" are the lines that hit me especially hard - it's talking about a feeling of huge relief, a release of burdens, a loss of all problems associated with life as we know it. It will sound pretentious to a lot of people, but for me, Pyramid Song is one of the most breathtaking songs ever. You and Whose Army?is completely different again, housing an almost bluesy, minimalist vibe with foggy vocals for the first two minutes or so, and then rising into a glorious climax of trademark Yorke piano and majestic falsetto. I Might Be Wrong mixes things up yet again, with a funky, danceable vibe layered around some of Colin's most intense basslines yet, an awesome distorted guitar line, and some uncomplex, sing along lyrics. Knives Out is another highlight, possibly being one of Radiohead's most accessible hits since OK Computer - sounding like a cross between the first few minutes of Paranoid Android and, say, something more conventional, like Optimistic It's thoroughly melancholy, depressing to some people, but it's still a winner. Dollars and Cents, to me, didn't seem like anything special at first, but give it time, and you will find a true epic here, with some great lyrics and nice cymbal-driven percussion riffs. Hunting Bears is classed as filler to most people, just being 2 minutes of guitar noodling. I find it pleasantly ambient, and I like the atmosphere it gives off. It's also tremendously fun (and incredibly easy) to play on guitar, always a plus. Like Spinning Plates is an incredibly experimental song for Radiohead, and it sounds completely different live to this version, but this version, at the moment, is my favourite. Yorke's vocals are cruelly cut and pasted over odd sound waves and, er, the unmistakable sound of, erm, spinning plates! Life in a Glasshouse continues Radiohead's tradition of saving an incredible song till last. This song again, didn't grab me at first, but once you get around the fact that this song revolves around the crazy saxophone solos rather than anything else, you'll find this to be a rousing collaboration with, er, whoever the saxophonist is. To most people, Amnesiac is seen as Kid A's little brother - smaller in scale, I guess. But sometimes younger siblings aren't scared to beat up their elder brother or sister, and for me, Amnesiac does that with ease. Amnesiac > Kid A, without a doubt. Now you can start flaming me. Hehe.
